Fire Safety Instructer

This week we had a fire safety expert come to show us how to react to a fire in our building. Here is The Commander getting ready to put out the fire.

He did good! Aimed it right at the base of the fire!! I feel safe now!!

Even little Betty put her walker aside and took good aim! Way to go Betty!!!

Roosevelt School- Perkinstown, Wi

More old school

This is the sign that was always posted down below the hill by the school. I wonder who pulled it out and saved it all these years. I think the school was closed in 1950 because that was when the state graded schools came in. To think that sign stood guard at the door all this time.

A picture of some of the blackboards on the wall. I remember writing on one of these,"Iwill not poke people with my pencil", one hundred times!!! One of the naughty big boys locked me and James in the woodshed at recess.(I did not like James!) When I sat back at my desk I poked that bully with a real sharp pencil! Well, he had it coming!!
These little chair always sat way up in the front of the room so the first and second graders could use them for their classes. Now there they hang way up there a mile high. I guess they would have been stolen long ago otherwise.
My final shot of fond memories at the Roosevelt school in Perkinstown,Wisconsin. I don't know the lady- she just stepped out the door as I snapped the camera. Guess she was here for some good chili too. Good-bye old friend--- I'm gonna try to reach that bell rope one more time!!! Rita Westrich Emmerich

Roosevelt School-Perkinstown

Last week we went to Perkinstown to remove the summer flowers from the cemetary. The Perkinstown Ladies Aide was having a chili feed and bake sale at my old school where I spent eight years of my life learning the basic three R"s.
This is one of the old one-room schools you maybe read about in the history books. All eight grades in one room!! Those teachers really had their hands full. The building is used today for the Ladies Aide and the Four H club that is still going in Perkinstown.
The bell tower is still in tact. Can you see the bell up there in it? I wonder if it will still ring--I'm going inside to see. Nope, I guess not. Someone cut the rope off way up so I can't reach it!! Darn!! I wanted to hear the old bell once more.

Here is the water pump that sat outside by the flag. now here it is sitting in the hallway where we used to hang up our winter coats. Every morning one of the big eighth boys had the job to take a water pail out and fill it with cold water. It was brought inside and placed on a table in the back of the room with a metal dipper in it. That was where we went to get a drink when we were thirsty!! Oh, yeah, all twenty five of us drank from the same dipper each day. No bubbler, no paper cups, just the old metal dipper. Oh, yeah, we did dump the water from our dipper into a slop bucket under the table!!! Sanitary, you say__what is that???
